【Bra Bra Classroom】Lesson 3
I Don’t Want My Bra to Gap Anymore!
Cup gaping, nipples showing, side fat and back fat spilling out…
Sometimes the straps slip off and cause embarrassment.
Sometimes the bra is so tight it feels suffocating.
Uneven breasts, distorted breast shape, or the whole bra riding up…
After wearing bras for so many years,
which woman hasn’t experienced these problems before?
It’s safe to say that at least 9 out of 10 women have gone through one or more of these frustrating situations.
⸻
Why Does Bra Cup Gaping Happen?
When you first buy a bra, it may feel like it fits perfectly.
But after wearing it for a while, you may suddenly notice the cup no longer sits properly and begins to gap.
Many women experience this issue.
In fact, there are several possible causes of bra gaping.
⸻
1. Wearing the Wrong Bra or the Wrong Size
Examples include:
• The underwire sitting too high
• Cup size too big
• Band size too loose
• Shoulder straps not adjusted properly
This situation is extremely common.
If your bra keeps moving upward and cannot stay firmly at the underbust, the main reason is usually that the band is too loose, causing the bra to lose its support and stability.
Possible reasons include:
• The bra has become worn out and the elastic has weakened
• The bra size chosen was too large from the beginning
Wearing the wrong bra can cause breast tissue displacement, leading to:
• Underarm bulges (side breast / accessory breast tissue)
• Back fat
• Thickened back lines
In short, the bra you are wearing no longer suits your current body shape or breast shape.
You should consider re-measuring and choosing the correct size again.
⸻
Step-by-Step Bra Fit Check
Step 1
Choose the correct bra size.
(Please refer to Bra Bra Classroom Lesson 1: How to Measure Your Bra Size Correctly)
Step 2
Stand up straight and check if the shoulder straps sit at the center of your shoulders.
Adjust the straps so that you can comfortably slide one finger underneath.
Step 3
Check whether the underwire sits snugly along the base of the breasts.
Step 4
Check whether the center gore (the middle part of the bra) gently rests against your breastbone.
Step 5
Ensure the breasts are fully enclosed inside the cups.
Step 6
Raise both arms and check whether the bra shifts or rides up.
⸻
2. The Upper Edge of the Cup Does Not Fit the Breast
This situation is very common among Asian women, especially in Hong Kong.
This is because many women have a shallower breast shape.
Important note:
Shallow breasts do not mean small breasts.
What does “shallow breast shape” mean?
It means:
• The breast base is wider
• The projection is less forward
• The upper breast area may appear less full
In contrast, many Western women have breasts that project more forward and appear more three-dimensional and full, because their breast tissue is often more concentrated in the center.
Because of this difference, Western bras are often designed with deeper cups.
⸻
Solution for Shallow Breasts
Women with shallow breasts should choose:
• Shallow cup designs
• Padded or push-up styles
These styles help reduce the distance between the breast and the cup, preventing the cup from gaping during movement.
⚠️ Remember:
You should choose a shallower cup,
NOT a thinner cup.
These are two completely different things.
Shallow Cup
A cup with less depth, allowing the breast to sit closer to the cup.
Thin Cup
A cup made with very thin fabric, almost like a thin layer covering the breast.
These bras are often worn by women who prefer a cooler and lighter feel, but they can easily cause visible nipples.
⸻
Why Buying a Smaller Size Does NOT Solve Gaping
Many women think:
“If my bra gaps, I should just buy a smaller size.”
But if you have shallow breasts, the problem is not the size —
it is the cup depth.
If you buy a smaller size:
• Only the overall size becomes smaller
• The cup depth proportion remains the same
So the problem will not be solved.
Instead, it may cause:
• Insufficient coverage
• Breast tissue spilling out
• More visible side breast (accessory breast tissue)
⸻
3. Hollow Areas Near the Underarm Causing Cup Gaping
Some women have larger and heavier breasts, but the bras they wear may not provide sufficient support.
Over time, the weight of the breasts pulls the tissue downward.
As the breast tissue gradually loses elasticity, the breasts may begin to sag, creating hollow areas near the front of the underarm and causing the bra cups to gap.
In this situation, there is usually no quick fix.
The best solution is to choose bras with strong lifting support, designed to lift the breasts from the bottom upward, helping to prevent further sagging.
For women with heavier breasts, it is recommended to choose bras with:
• 3–4 rows of back hooks
• A wider and longer underband
These designs provide stronger support and can also reduce the pressure on the shoulders.
⸻
4. Cup Gaping When Raising Arms, Bending Over, or Slouching
If you tend to slouch or have a hunched posture, with your shoulders constantly leaning forward and your back not straight while walking, then unfortunately your bra may continue to gap.
In this case, the first thing you need to change is your posture.
Try this simple test:
When you stand up straight and lift your chest, your breasts naturally lift as well, and the cup gaping will immediately improve.
However, once you slouch again, your chest collapses inward, your breasts lose their lifted position, and the bra cups will begin to gap again.
If you often forget to sit or stand straight, you may consider using posture-correcting garments, such as:
• Posture support vests
• Posture correction braces
• Supportive corset-style posture wear
These are especially helpful for office workers and students who sit for long periods.
The gentle support helps keep your back and shoulders aligned, gradually improving poor posture.
Over time, this can not only reduce slouching but also help prevent the development of a thick or rounded upper back.
Long-term poor posture can cause several issues, including:
• Cup gaping
• Breast sagging
• Underarm bulges (side breast)
Therefore, posture plays a very important role in bra fit and breast shape.
⸻
A bra that doesn’t fit properly will cause the cups to gap whenever you move, and the breast tissue will easily shift out of place.
A well-fitting bra, on the other hand, should stay securely in place and not gap easily.
Cup gaping may be caused by an incorrect size, or it may be due to poor cup design and support.
When the correct size is combined with a well-designed cup, it improves both coverage and stability, helping the bra hold the breasts in place so that once you adjust them properly, they will not move around easily.
